"9:13" is an improvisatory work for clarinet ensemble that explores the coming together of minimalist and aleatoric musical practices. Each part performs in a separate time signature, creating a complex web of repeating figures that converge and intersect throughout the piece. This independence within the ensemble generates a unique performative interaction as overlapping patterns slowly shift and change, offering a fresh listening experience with each performance.
The title "9:13" holds no significance or meaning to the music - truthfully that's what time it was when I finished writing the piece. I find the serendipitous name to reflect the nature of improvisation as it relates to the present moment. I hope that this piece will challenge performers and audiences to experience music beyond the traditional constraints and foster deeper listening and communication within the ensemble.�
